Good afternoon!

Little did I know that yesterday when I achieved a new yoga pose for the first time (wheel!) that it was National Yoga Day! Little things like that make me happy :0)

Yesterday at the gym I rocked out on the elliptical for 45 minutes, did some planks, crunches, and yoga moves in the mat area. When the middle aged woman next to me whipped out a HEADSTAND and several other intense yoga poses without toppling over, I threw out a few wheels in celebration. She didn’t seem to notice. I held back an intense desire to strike up a conversation about yoga with her and ask her to be my guru. After one ab machine, I gained the courage to do a couple arm machines – um … arm extension is awkward. I started out with 30 lbs. = HAHAHA I managed to get out 12 reps, then switched to 15 lbs. for 12 more reps, and down to 10 lbs. for the final set. I legitimately have no arm/upper body strength. Really must work on this. I also did 3 sets of 12 reps on the overhead press, again on a sad 10 lbs. Barely got them out. To make myself feel better about my lack of arm strength, I sped through a mile on the treadmill, incline 1, in 9 minutes.

After stopping to get my beastly eyebrows waxed and literally pick up apples, oranges, and carrots at Big Y, I headed on home to make lunch.

Buffalo crackwich with spinach + a pink orange!

There was another half to that wrap that made its way into my mouth before the camera could capture it. Soooo my oranges are pink! I got confused and thought I bought a mini grapefruit or something by accident, but nope! The sticker on the other one is pink and says they’re Cara Cara Navels from Sunkist! I never knew there were pink oranges, but it was a fun surprise!
This lunch was soo good and satisfying! For dinner, I headed over to the restaurant at the Student Union with two of my sisters. Like other times, I got the “Sesame Encrusted Grilled Tuna Steak with Wasabi MayoSesame encrusted grilled tuna steak topped with baby field greens, avocado, red onion & cucumber with spicy wasabi mayo on a toasted kaiser roll. Served with a mixed green salad or chips.”

No pic, sorry! It’s not very attractive anyway, but I do love it! I got the sandwich on multigrain bread instead of the white kaiser roll, wasabi mayo on the side (it’s super super spicy!) and ate it open face on only one slice of bread. I always get the wasabi mayo on the side because it is STRONG, so I just dab some on with my knife as I go. On the side, I got a mixed green salad with their champagne vinaigrette. I dipped my fork into the dressing before stabbing my mixed greens – perfect amount!
For dessert, I stole the two maraschino cherries off of my friends’ brownie sundaes – yum!
After dinner, we headed over to the NPHC step-show. The NPHC is the umbrella organization for historically black fraternities and sororities. If you don’t know what stepping is, YouTube it NOW! It’s so amazing and entertaining. It was really fun but we were exhausted (22 year olds have early bed times) and left kind of early. Before bed, I snacked on some popcorn:
P1230243.JPG
Popcorn is quickly becoming my nightly go-to snack. I love the crunch and salt! Must restock …
I woke up this morning – arms and back sore from machines and the wheel! – and repeated my YogaDownload.Com favorite podcast of Morning Flow #1. Because I was a little sore, getting into wheel was a bit more difficult today, but I did it!
Breakfast was a repeat:
P1230244.JPG P1230245.JPG
Coffee with skim and PureVia, Plain 0% Chobz, MultiGrain Cheerios, and banana with a side of yoga mat

After breakfast I did some work in bed and eventually headed over to the school gym. I had a lot of energy and thought I wanted to run, but after 5 minutes on the treadmill, I got bored of staring at the pool and switched to elliptical. I spent an hour on a random setting and did some reading for Nutrition Through the Lifecycle. My friends came and made fun of me for doing school reading the first week of school, but I like it! And also, it’s science, which I really need to keep up with as I’m not so great at it.
Lunch was made quickly after returning:
P1240246.JPG P1240247.JPG P1240248.JPG P1240249.JPG
3 egg whites in a Flat Out with a Garlic & Herb LC wedge, Frank’s and salsa + a Gala with cinnamon

I accidentally opened the cap off the cinnamon bottle instead of just flipping it up, and so got a pile of cinn on 3 apple slices. Oh well, I just shook it off and made a cinnamon dipping pool! The wrap was so good – Flat Out wraps are so fluffy and soft – they go great with egg whites!
Right now I’m feeling kind of snacky .. better go find something!

Hiii!

Sorry I’ve been absent – I needed a few days to regroup, pack, move back into school and settle. I’ll just recap today for now, and if I find anything exciting in the last few days’ pictures, you’ll be the first to know!

I woke up feeling good after a night at the bar with my friends – it was so so so so so fun and I couldn’t be happier I went! I just hung around for a little, cleaning and stuff before hitching a ride to the co-op (aka the bookstore) with one of my sisters. I picked up my books and some other goodies – including a new Vera Bradley wallet!

P1180218.JPG

We also headed to Walmart where I picked up an $18 TV stand – which I then took home, unpacked and assembled by myself! Screws, nails, and all! I’m extremely proud of myself for putting something together. I’m awesome. While being productive, I ate:

P1180213.JPG
Plain Chobani, banana, MultiGrain Cheerios

Dorm lighting = bad pictures.
Eventually I also made a super small lunch.
P1180217.JPG
MultiGrain Flat Out wrap with roasted red pepper hummus

P1180219.JPG
Whole Foods fruit salad

After a sorority meeting, I made my way over to disappointment the dining hall. I feasted on tomato soup, whole wheat toast with Smart Balance, and some steamed veggies. Yum. I also snacked on half a chocolate chip z-bar:

P1180220.JPG

At the surprisingly not packed gym, I ellipticalled for 35 minutes – 5 minutes on crossramp 10 and resistance 7 and 2 minutes on crossramp 12, resistance 10 repeated. After 30 boring minutes on a new and not improved stair stepper randomized level 7 workout, I did some ab work and called it a night. I also tried to catch up on blog reading while working on my fitness, but my Google reader is in the triple digits so I’m still wayyyy behind on reading and commenting.

I packed my lunchers for tomorrow:

P1180221.JPG
Spinach, hummus, and raisins on a Flat Out Honey Wheat wrap

Orange sections

And snacked on an organic pinata apple I picked up at Whole Foods:

P1180223.JPG
With cinnamon, obviously

My Big Y near school started carrying Flat Outs! I was so excited I grabbed two flavors to try – MultiGrain Flax and Honey Wheat! Love ittt!

I packed lunch due to my schedule for tomorrow’s first day of classes:

  • 8:45 – Breakfast with a couple of my sisters at the dhall
  • 9:30-10:45 – Nutrition Through the Life Cycle – SO SO excited for this class!!
  • 11-12:15ish – Gym
  • 12:30-1:45 – Medieval English Literature – so not excited for this class – except for the fact I’ll be eating in it
  • 2-3:15ish – Shower, change, snack
  • 3:30-4:45 – Emotion Through Literature and Film – pretty excited for this class!

Obviously, my appetite is off today – as it has been the last couple days. I know it’s due to a combination of things going on – stress, sadness, moving back to school, my new sleeping pill, etc. I’m sure that once I get back into the swing of things, I’ll be back on track with hunger! At least, I hope so – not wanting to eat/what I want to eat is not cool with me. I like to know what my body wants – I like cravings. Yes, I just said that.

Anyway, I’m off to bed early – first day of school tomorrow! I’ll be back to commenting regularly soon, I promise!

Good morning!

Yesterday after the gym I munched on fruit snacks, adult version:

P1110121.JPG
Half a banana, half an apple, and pom arils
I really had no idea what I wanted for dinner but eventually I settled on Italian! I halved a spaghetti squash and baked it face down in about an inch of water for 50 minutes on 350. I topped it with tomato basil sauce that I threw some onions and zucchini in and topped it with parm. Parmesan cheese is seriously just so amazing – I think it’s my second favorite after goat cheese! I improvised garlic bread by sprinkling a multigrain english muffin with garlic salt and toasting it:

P1110122.JPG

P1110124.JPG

I know I said I was trying to stop snacking before bed, but that of course made me obsess about having something sweet. I had some of my favorite trail mix and another friendly clementine:

Cranberry Fitness Mix

Clever Clem
I slept really well again, but I also took Advil PM last night and the night before, for knee pain and sleep. Normally night time meds make me actually wake up more and feel restless, but it’s been working the last few nights. I hate having to take something to sleep, but it’s better than not feeling rested!
Breakfast was one of my favorite combos:

P1110132.JPG
P1110134.JPG
Plain 0% Fage, banana, raspberries, MultiGrain Cheerios + coffee with skim and Truvia

The plain Greek yogurt, MultiGrain Cheerios, and banana combination is just so perfect – seriously, TRY IT! We had some fresh raspberries hanging around from a family get together so I threw them in for fun and deliciousness! Raspberries are one of my favorite fruits … although I can and do say that about most things .. bananas, apples, strawberries, mango .. whatever, I love it all!
I tried to do Sun Salutation Flow #2 by Dave Farmar but I had to shut him off to shut him up! He made me chuckle a few times, but I like a fast flow and NO DISCUSSION – yoga is quiet time, not story time, Dave! When he started to literally “om”, I paused him and free-styled a few sun salutations before making breakfast.
Nothing much going today (shocker): gym, Target, maybe heading to the mall? Anything exciting going on in your day?

Last night after my post-gym snack, I wanted more clementines, but my brother had eaten the rest of them.  When I made my snack, there were probably 10.  An hour later, 0.  Sweet.  So I ate an increasingly squishy but delicious pear.

I woke up and had coffee but didn’t hear one rumble for two hours.  Even then, it was far from starvation, but I needed to get my metabolism moving!  Daily Chobani consumption occurred:

0% Plain Chobani, banana, MultiGrain Cheerios

After digesting a bit, I attempted a full-length podcast YogaDownload.Com class, but at times it was kind of slow moving and it was pretty repetitive, so I got bored after half an hour and quit.  Oh well, I was supposed to take today off anyway.

Eventually I made myself eat lunch/3pm meal:

Leftover roasted veggies tossed with balsamic and  Joseph’s low-carb tortilla with hummus

Eh – I don’t think I’ll pair the remaining leftovers with balsamic – it wasn’t that great.  Roasted vegetables are amazing on their own anyway!

My dad was taking my brother and I out to dinner for my birthday and we went back to Sakura.  I just love it!  Definitely my favorite restaurant and I haven’t had Japanese in so long.  I debated all afternoon over the grilled vegetables and tofu dish or sushi.  It’s freezing out and I wanted something warm, but I’ve also slacked on my sushi obsession the past few months.

Forgot my camera (but found my charger!).  I started off with some miso soup and a glass of Pinot Grigio, from the Campanile, in Italy.  I ended up going with the “Grilled Vegetables and Tofu.”  It was pretty good!  There was broccoli, cauliflower, orange and green peppers, onion, shredded zucchini and carrots, and about eight generous hunks of super soft tofu in a soy-based sauce.  I’d guess there was also sesame oil – but not too much! – and ginger in the sauce as well.  The portion size was pretty perfect as well – it was probably a serving of tofu, maybe a little more, and tons of veggies.  It was the perfect amount of food – ate it all except for the peppers (ick).  I’d definitely order it again!

I was planning on having the last piece of my birthday carrot cake from Friday when we got back, but my mom had tried a bite of it, deemed it too stale, and threw it out.  Sad face.  I watched Heavyweights with my brother –  classic.  Since this post is completely void of anything interesting, I’m bringing back the Tuesday Top 5!

Top 5 Healthy Foodie Products I Want to Try – in no particular order

  • VitaTops/Muffins/Brownies.  I mean, really.  Fudgy peanut butter?  Let’s be friends.  Corn muffin top?  I would find uses for you no one else could dream of.  I can only find Banana Walnut by me and as a college student – the price tag is a tad steep.
  • FitNutz/PB2.  Mix-in peanut butter really intrigues me.  Sometimes I want the taste without all the calories and fat.  I know it’s good fat, but still.  Dying to try!  Nowhere near me in stores and I’ve banned myself from food shopping online.
  • Nutridel Cookies.  Jenny made them sound so delicious – and seriously, they’re healthy cookies!  Imagining them crumbled in some Chobani makes me drool.  See above excuses.
  • Heart Thrives.  I’ve seen these all over, can’t find them anywhere, and seriously can’t pay to ship my food.  Gah!
  • Me and Goji Cereal.  Seriously – best company idea ever?  Perfect for picky eaters!

Every week I go on at least one of these websites and debate ordering – but my bank account holds me back!  Let me know if you think they’re worth it (even though I already agree)!

What are some foods you want to try?

Right??

At Whole Foods while picking up my cake and some supplies for my grandma who’s sick, I obviously hit up the salad/hot bar:

P1020175.JPG

My box contained:

  • Mesclun greens
  • Steamed brocc
  • Red onion
  • Roasted eggplant
  • A hard-boiled egg
  • Dried cranberries
  • Peas
  • Piece of fajita turkey
  • Piece of chicken provencal

The hot bar at the Westport Whole Foods is pretty small and I was a little disappointed – there weren’t any marinated mushrooms (best thing ever) and the sign for roasted cauliflower (second best thing ever) was out, but suspiciously looked like green beans almondine. There isn’t any hummus out to use as a topping/dressing and my chicken provencal was definitely curried chicken. Not complaining since it was good, but how hard is it to label correctly?? The fajita turkey wasn’t good at all, I took a bite and left the rest. The roasted eggplant was the best part – I wish I had added more!

Out of the corner you can see a tiny bit of my drink – Hint water in mango-grapefruit. It’s definitely fruity, but not overpowering and not sweet at all – in a good way. It’s very refreshing, calorie and everything else-free. This flavor reminds me of summer! Yum!

On the way home, my mom and I stopped at Anthropologie to pick out my presents!

913960_069_b.jpg 913432_066_b.jpg

Major sale! Plus a belt that’s not online.

Apparently ginorm salads are not fuel enough for an Anthropologie sale and as soon as we got to the car, I scarfed down a granny smith I had in my purse for such snacking emergencies.

Dinner was Japanese at Sakura, in Westport. I started off dinner with a glass of shiraz and some miso soup. For my entree, I ordered the combination bento box with shrimp and scallops:

P1020176.JPG

Clockwise from upper left:

  • Pineapple and orange slices
  • Iceberg salad with amazing ginger dressing
  • Seaweed salad
  • Teriyaki scallops and veg
  • Picked things
  • Teriyaki shrimp and veg

Demolished. For reals, everything was gone. Minus the middle pickled things, including all the onion slices and miniscule carrots in the teriyakis. SO DAMN GOOD. I also had a few chopsticks full of my side of brown rice, but not a lot at all.

Home and time for cake! All natural carrot cake from Whole Foods:

P1020179.JPG   P1020180.JPG

What was left after 6 people had a slice.

It was a small cake (I don’t like leftover cake) and so so delicious! It was so moist – dense but light – if that makes sense? So rich and amazing. The cream cheese frosting was probably the best I’ve ever had – exactly what it is supposed to taste like – sweet and creamy, with a slight tang. Drool.

The Just Desserts bakery, based in San Francisco, uses all natural ingredients, no trans fats, and bakes all their cakes from scratch! It honestly tasted like it had been baked fresh at WF, so they obviously know what they’re doing.

I really wanted another piece, but that was the wine/sugar high talking. After letting the cake settle, I was stuffed. Seriously the fullest I’ve been in a while. Ick. I can definitely tell the difference between healthy-food-full and sugar-coma-full. But it was my birthday and so worth it!

Check out what my dogs got me:

P1020177.JPG

They eat carrots. A lot of carrots. So my mom and stepdad cut one in half and wrapped it in saran wrap as my dogs’ present to me. This is where I come from …

ANYWAY.

I started the morning off with a 20 minute YogaDownload.com podcast of Yoga for Runners and ate a tummy-cleansing breakfast:

P1020184.JPG P1020183.JPG
Coffee with skim and TruVia, 0% plain Chobani with frozen blueberries, half a banana, and Kashi Heart to Heart

Gym later, when it stops snowing. Yes, it’s snowing again. Starting my countdown to Ft. Lauderdale now.

Today is my birthday! 22 always seemed like the “adult” age to me since its the age I would (and will) be graduating college. But I still don’t feel all that grown up – this one does feel different, though. But not as different as turning 20! That was the one year that when people asked if I felt different, I actually did. Leaving the teenage years behind was strange, but definitely welcome.

It’s also Heather’s (from HEAB) birthday! Happy birthday! I hope I look and feel as great as you do in 12 years and be as committed to healthy living!

No pic of din last night but it was ginorm – broiled salmon with carrots, brussels, and asparagus with S&P and a toasted sandwich thin with garlic hummus. Obviously, there was about a cup’s worth of each veggie and a sizeable amount of salmon (one of my favorite foods, hands down) so I had a nice little food baby all night long. I wanted dessert but my veggie child wouldn’t allow it – I settled for a cup of Bigelow’s Vanilla Chai tea (so good!) with TruVia and some skim.

Birthday breakfast included bananas:

P1010174.JPG
Stew Leonard’s Breakfast Blend with skim and TruVia + Plain Chobani with a banana and MultiGrain Cheerios

There’s something about Greek yogurt and bananas that can’t be beat. Which reminds me that I really need to taste test (aka shove down my throat) the new strawberry banana Chobani that’s waiting for me.

All I want for my birthday (but not really) is to find my camera battery charger! I have no idea where it is and I’m getting anxious! Blackberry pictures make me cringe.

Also, for it to stop snowing! I had no clue it would be snowing when I woke up and it’s supposed to continue all day. It’s not a blizzard or anything, but probably the one day of the year I don’t want it to snow – I need my birthday dinner!

My mom and I are heading to Whole Foods for lunch and to pick up a cake for me! I’m also going to try to get her to do a mother/daughter mani/pedi but she’s not such a fan (how are we related??) so we’ll see how that goes. Tonight I’m going to Sakura, my favorite Japanese restaurant, with the whole fam. I seriously can’t wait. Already know what I’m getting. Haven’t had Japanese in SO long and it’s seriously not okay.

Have a great day!

P.S. – My camera un-ate pictures of my bfast burrito and apple slice snack from yesterday’s post, so check them out if you feel the need, which I’m sure you don’t.

I hope you all had a great day, whether you celebrate or not!

I started Christmas morning with an egg white omelet with Laughing Cow and some apple with cinnamon.  And coffee, of course.  After opening presents, my mom and stepdad headed to his sister’s house and my brother and I just hung around until it was time to go to my aunt and uncle’s.  We were supposed to be there around 1:30, so I figured we’d be eating around 2 but I wasn’t sure.  I also didn’t know what we’d be eating, so I ate a small lunch around 12:30.

Half a hummus and spinach sandwich, green beans with salt and pepper, and spicy black bean soup with a dollop of Fage

We ended up opening presents around 3 and not eating until 4:30ish.  I snacked on a couple plates of apple, pear, blackberry, and pomegranate fruit salad – yum!  For “dinner” I had salad – mixed green with mushroom, cucumbers, balsamic vinegar, and EVOO – plus veggie picked out from some vegetable fried rice and some roasted chicken.  Eating at weird times throws my stomach off.  I don’t understand why we can’t eat meals at normal times on holidays.  It seems like an American tradition to eat a huge meal in the middle of the afternoon, with snacking before and desserts after.  I think that’s part of the problem people have with holidays and overeating.  If we just kept meal times the same, I don’t think people would overeat as much or have to strategize!

Anyway, before bed I ended up snacking on a piece of whole wheat bread smeared with a plain Laughing Cow wedge.  At first I didn’t know what I wanted – I heated up some soup (Campbell’s Chicken Tortilla) but it was gross and too much food anyway.  Then I decided on a CrackWich, but ended up putting the hummus and hot sauce back into the fridge.  Sometimes simplicity is best when it comes to snacks.

I woke up this morning and had coffee and half an apple pie Larabar before heading to the gym:

I took it relatively easy – at least on the treadmill.  Still incredibly bored on it – 3.1m in 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes on the stair mill and 15 on the elliptical – the last half in reverse mode.  I did reverse mode today and on Christmas Eve.  It’s something that quickly becomes obvious I never do, since I feel my quads and other muscles working in ways the stair mill, running, and forward ellipticalling do not make them.  It’s hard.

Breakfast part two was simple and quick:

Plain Cheerios with skim and half a banana

What was your favorite present of the holiday season? I got lots of fun stuff yesterday!  DVDs, gift cards, new Pandora charms, etc.  Pretty sure my favorites are the Whole Foods gift card from my brother and this:

A Swedish massage from my mom and stepdad!

Off to make lunch and watch season one of Weeds!
