Happy Halloween!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays!  I think it’s because I love fall, and it’s such a huge part of the season.  I love the leaves, the decorations, the food (pumpkin!), the clothes, everythingggg!

Last night I tried to get in the ultimate Halloween-y mood with some scary movies.  BUT NOTHING WAS ON!  Um, world?  When did the Halloween love stop?  Disney, what happened to Hocus Pocus?  ABC Family, That 70’s Show” doesn’t jump out at me as an obvious choice for your 13 nights of Halloween.  Holiday fail, television.  Le sigh.

Breakfast was boring but what I was craving:

PA301093PA3010923 egg whites + LC French Onion wedge and apple with cinnamon + coffee with skim, PureVia, and cinnamon

The amount of cinnamon and apples I eat is absurd.  But delicious.

Last night’s snack attack:

PA301088Strawberry Chobz + 1 cup Cheerios

Only took that one crappy picture because the mess needed to be in my stomach ASAP.  But at least I used my Little Mermaid spoon!  Was yummy.

Plus a few grapes before bed.  There were more than this originally …

I knew I wanted cereal and yogurt.  I had seen the Cheerios in my fam’s cabinet earlier when I was cooking my delish multigrain cereal and intended to use those.  I went in to grab them and saw the Kashi H2H I eat but apparently no one else does since it’s left over from summer.  I debated.  I ingredient checked.  Cheerios, why is sugar so high up on your ingredient list?  They aren’t even sweet!  And modified corn starch?  Uncool.  But while 1 serving of the British goodbyes have 1g of sugar, H2H has 5 grams for a smaller serving!  Since the strawberry yogurt has mad sugar, I went with the Cheerios.

I felt really good about my decision and how I made it – by being informed.  While I think that nutrition labels do need a lot of work, I also believe that they are a completely useful and necessary tool for making smart decisions everyday. This article is really great and eye-opening. I completely agree with all of the author’s points. Does anyone else find it weird and a little insulting that the FDA thinks we need labels on the FRONT of our food? Are Americans really that lazy that we can’t be bothered to TURN A BOX AROUND?

Was there one person/event/article that really convinced you to pay attention to what you eat?  And how much of it you should be eating?  For me, it was the intro to nutrition class I took my freshman year.  Keeping a week-long food journal pretty much ended me 900+ calorie salad and 1000+ calorie muffin habit.  Yes, UConn has these things.  I really don’t even know how you make a MUFFIN contain more than a thousand calories.  I’m actually really impressed/curious.

Today I WILL:

  • Finish my laundry
  • GYM!
  • STUDY!!
  • Find a semi dress
  • Find jeans that fit and don’t pull off like sweatpants (welcome, but annoying)
  • Find some winter running gear
  • TJ’s?  Pumpkin butter … I need you

No, not weight-wise.  I didn’t mention it yesterday, but over the weekend there was a horrific attack on my campus.  At about 12:30 am Saturday night/Sunday morning, a fire alarm in the Student Union was pulled.  When everyone was outside, a fight broke out and two people were stabbed.  One of the men died, a football player, Jasper Howard.  The other victim was released from the hospital. I think they know who did it, but no one has been caught/arrested.

While there have been sexual assaults on campus that have been publicized, there has not been a MURDER.  It is completely horrific and I’m extremely creeped out.  Last night I went out to my car alone in the dark to get something and had to ask myself if I was safe.  Even with those previous assaults, I have never in 4 years felt unsafe on my campus.  We live in such a rural area (there are legitimately cows outside my window) that violent crime is almost unheard of.  As sad as it is, sexual assault on a college campus is not all that surprising.  Stabbings, on the other hand …

There’s a very quiet and weird vibe on campus right now – and I haven’t even been to class yet.  This crime is terrifying and devastating to our school – especially when it happened to a prominent figure the day we won our Homecoming game.

Anyway – I really wanted to run this morning, but it’s just too cold – apparently it feels like it’s 20 degrees.  I can go this afternoon after work, but I reallyyyyy need to get some winter running gear because soon it won’t matter what time of day I go.  Afterall, this happened yesterday:

More October snow.  Normal, Storrs.  Breakfast was soo good and refreshing!

Toasted Maple Nut coffee with skim and PureVia, Chobani Vanilla with chopped Honeycrisp and cinnamon.

Gotta get ready for class!

Today was so long!  The breast cancer walk in Hartford was pretty miserable due to the downpour that has now occurred two years in a row for the walk – but it was for a great cause so we didn’t really mind!

When I got back to the house, I had the sandwich I had made and packed in the morning but didn’t end up eating there.

Arnold’s 100% WW Sandwich Thin with pepper turkey, romaine, Naturally Delicious BBQ sauce, and a Laughing Cow Light Swiss wedge.

I love this BBQ sauce because it has no high-fructose corn syrup!  It’s worth the extra money and it such a big bottle anyway.  I also packed a Z-bar, mini Clif bar, and an apple but just waited til we got home to eat anything.  With my sammie I also ate another Walmart Honeycrisp with cinnamon and some green tea.

A few hours after lunch (around 1), I was STARVING.  I tried to quiet my stomach with some almonds and walnuts but it was no use and I finally just decided to eat dinner – at 4pm.  I really am 80.  I ran to my dining hall’s to-go deli option and got a whole wheat wrap with turkey, lettuce, jalapenos, tomatos, and cucumbers.  I asked for extra veggies and they did not disappoint in packing them in.  I didn’t get a picture because as soon as I got back with my wrap, I was in sorority meetings for the next 4 hours.  Really.  I scarfed down my wrap in between slathering it with hummus and hot sauce.  It is my favorite thing to eat at school from the dining halls.  Literally I eat this combo almost every night – but it’s just SO GOOD!

I just snacked on some delish frozen grapes and now I’m getting ready for my long but exciting day tomorrow, including a schedule 2 miler!
