Hiii!

Sorry I’ve been absent – I needed a few days to regroup, pack, move back into school and settle. I’ll just recap today for now, and if I find anything exciting in the last few days’ pictures, you’ll be the first to know!

I woke up feeling good after a night at the bar with my friends – it was so so so so so fun and I couldn’t be happier I went! I just hung around for a little, cleaning and stuff before hitching a ride to the co-op (aka the bookstore) with one of my sisters. I picked up my books and some other goodies – including a new Vera Bradley wallet!

We also headed to Walmart where I picked up an $18 TV stand – which I then took home, unpacked and assembled by myself! Screws, nails, and all! I’m extremely proud of myself for putting something together. I’m awesome. While being productive, I ate:

After a sorority meeting, I made my way over to disappointment the dining hall. I feasted on tomato soup, whole wheat toast with Smart Balance, and some steamed veggies. Yum. I also snacked on half a chocolate chip z-bar:

At the surprisingly not packed gym, I ellipticalled for 35 minutes – 5 minutes on crossramp 10 and resistance 7 and 2 minutes on crossramp 12, resistance 10 repeated. After 30 boring minutes on a new and not improved stair stepper randomized level 7 workout, I did some ab work and called it a night. I also tried to catch up on blog reading while working on my fitness, but my Google reader is in the triple digits so I’m still wayyyy behind on reading and commenting.

My Big Y near school started carrying Flat Outs! I was so excited I grabbed two flavors to try – MultiGrain Flax and Honey Wheat! Love ittt!

I packed lunch due to my schedule for tomorrow’s first day of classes:

  • 8:45 – Breakfast with a couple of my sisters at the dhall
  • 9:30-10:45 – Nutrition Through the Life Cycle – SO SO excited for this class!!
  • 11-12:15ish – Gym
  • 12:30-1:45 – Medieval English Literature – so not excited for this class – except for the fact I’ll be eating in it
  • 2-3:15ish – Shower, change, snack
  • 3:30-4:45 – Emotion Through Literature and Film – pretty excited for this class!

Obviously, my appetite is off today – as it has been the last couple days. I know it’s due to a combination of things going on – stress, sadness, moving back to school, my new sleeping pill, etc. I’m sure that once I get back into the swing of things, I’ll be back on track with hunger! At least, I hope so – not wanting to eat/what I want to eat is not cool with me. I like to know what my body wants – I like cravings. Yes, I just said that.

Anyway, I’m off to bed early – first day of school tomorrow! I’ll be back to commenting regularly soon, I promise!

I was still snacky an hour later, so I had a random quarter of an apple from the fridge before I showered. Yep, I waited til after dinner to shower. I’m gross. But food often trumps cleanliness. Almost always, in fact.

I’ve spent the evening wasting my life by watching Wind Chill on Lifetime .. I have absolutely no idea what is supposed to be going on, but I like Emily Blunt. But wtf was she thinking? I also snacked on a yogurt bowl:

Good afternoon!

Yesterday afternoon I snacked on some carrots with hummus and sriracha:

Which was an awesome combo but gave me a stomachache for a few hours 😦 Sriracha, why have you forsaken me?

My mom was roasting a chicken for dinner and we stopped at the grocery store and on the way from my grandma’s. I was craving green beans, so I picked up a 5 pound bag. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll get through it!

Dinner was yummy! And not something that has been repeated 24723894 times in the past month:

Due to the snow/ice and my horrible driving skills, the gym did not happen yesterday. I did end up doing some core yoga from a YogaDownload.com podcast. Um – it was not easy but I obviously didn’t try hard enough because my abs aren’t even sore today.
One of my goals for this break is to actually get strength training in. I’ve done yoga the past three days, which is definitely counts for me! I also really want to be able to get into a balanced Airplane pose without having one hand on my dresser/falling over and dying. Also, not on a rock in the ocean. But whatever. After yoga-ing, I snacked on some grapes that I grabbed at the grocery store – that were $12!!! And SO not worth it. But we won’t tell my mom that.
This morning I woke up and debated breakfast and when to go to the gym. Nothing sounded super appealing, and I decided I’d rather get the gym over with for the day. So I had half of this bar of greatness:

Plus coffee with skim, TrueVia, and cinnamon before heading to the gym. I did 5 miles (painfully boring) in 46:28, averaging a 9:17 minute mile. Here’s what I did:
  • Mile 0-1: 6.2 mph
  • Mile 1-2: 6.3 mph
  • Mile 2-2.5: 6.4 mph
  • Mile 2.5-3: 6.5 mph
  • Mile 3-4: 6.6 mph
  • Mile 4-5: 6.7 mph

Simple, but effective! I had to take a quick walk & water break around mile 3.75 and then really just wanted to get it done. I wish I could have run outside but its so icy and I highly doubt the trail is super safe to run on. It is melting a lot out though, so maybe tomorrow!

I cooled down for 10 minutes, walking 3 mph at a 5.0% incline, and ate the other half of the Clif bar on the way out of the gym.

Taste:
Really good! Not the strongest gingerbread taste, but still really close. Loved the icing and the fact that it was drizzled, not coated – it was vanilla-y.  4/5.
Texture:
Chewy, soft, and nutty like a normal Clif. 5/5.
Fill Factor:
Gave me energy for my first 5-miler in a while, although the run itself could have been better. Other half held me over after the gym til now – about 1.5 hours.  5/5.
Ingredients:
Very long list, but nothing too scary – and 70% organic! Plus lotssss of vitamins and minerals! 22g of sugar in the whole bar – a lot – but good for pre- and post-run fuel. 4/5.

Comments: Great seasonal flavor! Definitely would buy it again.

Off to make a great lunch I’ve been planning since last night. Normal.

Good evening bloggies!

I was going to post earlier, but to be honest, I didn’t have much to say! I DID have a delicious dinner last night though – salmon and double grilled balsamic veggies from the Student Union. The salmon was the best I’ve ever had? Yes, even excluding salmon from real restaurants. I don’t know what they did to it, but it was so amazingly moist and perfectly seasoned. I even skipped the lemon dill sauce and I’m glad I did, it just would have masked the taste. I also had some grapes before bedtime that escaped the camera’s eye.

At chapter last night, we installed our new officers! It’s very exciting to have a new set of women in charge of our chapter. I’m so excited for them (exec especially) and I know that when I graduate, I’ll be leaving the chapter in extremely capable hands. This also means that for the first time since I’ve joined my sorority, I don’t have a position. It feels really strange for all of the major chapter decisions to be completely out of my hands, but I’m also excited to just be a member without the additional responsibilities of holding a position.

Anyway, I woke up this morning and had a brownie with my coffee:

I even heated it up! The chocolate brownie flavor is my least favorite of all the Clif bars I’ve tried, but heating it up helped! 10 seconds was a little too long though – it taste like a burnt brownie.
I made my way to the gym to spend 15 minutes each on the elliptical, the stair master, and the treadmill – with my close friend Voltaire and an article for my Children’s Lit class. I kept the elliptical at a steady pace and ran at an easy 10 minute mile, but I chose “variety” on the stair master today and cranked up the steps per minute rate. I eventually got up to 105 and was STRUGGLING but it felt so good to get that fast. I have a feeling my quads and hamstrings might be feeling that tomorrow, though.

A winning combo. Well, pretty much any Greek yogurt with any cereal is a winning combo for me – obviously since I eat it at least 6 days a week. We just finished Walk Two Moons in my children’s lit class – did anyone read that when they were younger? It’s by Sharon Creech. She also wrote Chasing Redbird. I loved both of those books then and reread them all the time! I’m a nerd and do that a lot. My professor complimented me on my discussion catalyst question about W2M which was awesome because I don’t think she particularly likes me.
Lunch was eaten in class a few hours later as I learned about prostitution and call girls in Human Sexuality …

Same breakfast and lunch as yesterday, I know, but they are so good and I’m trying to eat up my food stash since I’m only at school for another week and a half! While it was going on, the semester dragged, but now I feel like we’ve reached the end so quickly. I guess it always feels that way. I can’t even believe I’m a senior.
After work, I rushed home to shower and eat – I was quickly becoming hangry. I decided what I wanted for dinner before lunch (sad?) and was looking forward to it all day!

Now I’m sitting down to write an 8-10 pager on American Lit – specifically John dos Passos, Ray Bradbury, and John Updike. In case you want to contribute, here’s my thesis:
American literature is a literature of technology and progression. John Dos Passos, Ray Bradbury, and John Updike use setting and landscape to develop a distinctly American identity, both personal and national, that is directly connected to technology and progression. “The Big Money” excerpt from U.S.A., “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains,” and John Updike’s commentary on 9/11 from The New Yorker ultimately show that the authors believe the development of new technologies is destroying the human race.

Because it is December 3 and today it was 65 degrees. I went running in shorts and tee shirt. It is Connecticut. Also, it’s supposed to snow Saturday.

The semester is (finally) winding down and that makes me super busy busting out papers, rewrites, extra credit, and oh yeah, finals.

The past couple days have been boring anyway. A couple nice 4-milers, and a lot of boring classes I’ve had to farm my way through. Why am I an English major?

Woo. Hoo. 2 weeks from today the semester from hell will be OVER!!!!!!!!!!! And then I can focus on Christmastime fun and sleep, eat, and run for 4 straight weeks. Turning 22 is thrown in there too. Oh, and applying for jobs. Who knows how to write a good cover letter?? Or knows of any entry-level student affairs positions in higher ed, or store management jobs?

Dinner at the dhall was actually really delicious – and NOT a salad! Kosher kitchen is the way to go. Salmon with mixed veggies and summer squash, plus a piece of whole wheat toast with smart balance. So good.

Now I’m watching Elf and admiring our house’s Christmas tree :0)

I suck, I know.  Posting on any sort of schedule is impossible for some reason for me when I’m home.  My body knows it can actually relax and so I end up napping mid-afternoon and then sleeping for 10 hours.  Normal.  I think it’ll be better today – especially since I realized that I probably just have ALLERGIES – duh.  Really, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that before.  Luckily my mom has some allergy stuff I can take so that I won’t be a zombie all week!

After my nap yesterday, I had wanted something crunchy!  Kettlecorn to the rescue:

My mom and I tried to make the broccoli from my sorority’s Thanksgiving dinner.  We threw some broccoli florets in the steamer with a minced clove of garlic and a tablespoon of lemon juice.  It was a fail.  It didn’t taste anything at all like the recipe from Wednesday.  Tonight we’re going to try sautéing the garlic and lemon juice separately and then putting it on the steamed broccoli.  I’ll let you know how it goes.  Dinner was delish, though:

The chicken had some questionable ingredients, but it was honestly too good to pass up.  I threw some garlic powder on the broccoli, but it still wasn’t nearly as good as it could have been.  The b-nut squash was AMAZING – so sweet and creamy.  My mom put a little bit of butter (though I wish she hadn’t/would have told me before I ate it) and pepper in it, but it was amazingggg.  I’ll probs include some in my lunch a little later.

After dinner, my mom and I took a trip to Home Goods to get some bedding for my uncle who’s coming in on Tuesday for Thanksgiving.  It was 6:30 and after my nap this afternoon, I was already exhausted.  Honestly ridiculous, body.  Half and hour on the Stair Master should not wear me out this badly.  My tummy wasn’t satisfied from dinner, so when I got home I dominated this Honeycrisp:

Then I was good.  And promptly passed out in a coma-like state for many hours.  Still no movie reviews.  My b.  I swear on Taylor Lautner’s abs they’ll be up tonight!

I woke up around 9, immediately rethinking my planned 4 miler.  I figured I’d just go later, or treadmill it up … even though I secretly knew I would later talk myself out of both those options with a nap.  After some coffee, I decided just to GO.  When I really don’t want to run or go workout, I eat my pre-workout snack.  Then I HAVE to go.  For whatever reason, this works for me mentally.  I had a mini choco-chip Clif bar:

It tasted better than it looks.  Why is it three different shades?  I’m just noticing that and hoping it’s the shadow from my blinds …

I left my iPod downstairs, but I did do 4 miles.  I think my splits were 9:10, 9:11, 9:09, and 8:52.  A SUB 9:00 mile!!!  It’s totally possible I’ve hit that mark at school, but I only time splits on the trail at home since it’s flat and I don’t have to dodge cars.  Yayyyy!  Love love love getting faster and seeing results!  Especially after a week off from running.  I’m out of my running funk, I think.  And thank God.  I do love that elliptical at school, but they don’t have it at my gym at home.  That’s great because it will force to keep running outside over Christmas break!

I came home and made brekkie:

2 Eggo Nutri-Grain waffles, a Braeburn + cinnamon

The fam usually has Kashi waffles, but I guess CostCo only sells Eggo in bulk – hence the two 10-packs in the freezer.  Some icky ingredients, but still super tasty!

My mom and I are going shopping all over town and then I promiseeee my reviews will be up!  See you later!

So back to yesterday afternoon …

Two hours after I ate my lunch at work, I was hungry again.  Luckily I had packed for such an emergency.

A Clif Mini Mojo Bar in Dipped Chocolate Peanut that I snagged at my school’s Health Fair a few weeks ago.  It was pretty good.  Chocolately, peanutty – and with pretzels too!  I think I need the full-sized bar to give a full review though.  Also, it went down pretty fast …

Anyway, still in a not-great mood in the afternoon, I rushed home from work, threw on some running clothes (shorts and a t-shirt, because it was in the mid-sixties) and ran my same 4-mile route from the day before.  Again, I love that route.  And running just made me feel SO MUCH better.

Still, I escaped to Starbucks to be alone and write a paper for a few hours.  On the way over, I picked up my daily dinner wrap to go.  I got a Venti Iced Green Tea (unsweetened) and whipped out the giant hummus container I brought with me to slather on my wrap.  Yes, I got looks, but from a man who was doing a wood carving .. at Starbucks.  So I just looked right back.  I also whipped out a Tupperware container full of frozen grapes and devoured them.  At least it was healthy emotional eating.  I actually did get my paper done in between blog reading and general procrastination, so that’s good.  After being alone for a few hours off campus, I did feel much much better and came home in a good mood.

Last night after my shower, my legs felt and still do feel a little stiff from running a distance I just recently worked up to two days in a row.  Today I have a gym date planned for after work with my new Women’s Health.

Breakfast was boring.  Just some eggs that needed to be eaten and an apple:
